In The Ideal Team Player, Patrick Lencioni writes, “The key to all this is the unique combination of all three virtues, which make a person an ideal team player.” However, when even one virtue is missing, significant challenges arise.
The “Accidental Mess-Maker” lacks Smarts, is hardworking, and seems selfless but lacks social awareness. Their blunt feedback, lack of tact, and poor timing cause miscommunications and tension. They may dominate discussions, dismiss, overlook, or interrupt others, leaving a wake of confusion and frustration.
The “Lovable Slacker” is kind, collaborative, and “gets” others, but isn’t Hungry and lacks motivation. They do just enough and avoid extra effort or responsibility. Others enjoy working with them but are forced to compensate for them. They engage in meetings but over time, their complacency breeds frustration among teammates who must pick up the slack.
The “Skillful Politician” is ambitious, socially savvy, strategic—and self-serving. They are not Humble. They manipulate situations and people, steal the credit, and prioritize personal gain over collective results. While they appear valuable they gradually erode trust. By the time the team realizes their true nature, the damage has been done.
To determine if you possess all three virtues, seek honest feedback. Do you build up your team rather than yourself? Do you take initiative without being asked? Do you navigate interpersonal dynamics with awareness and tact?
The strongest teams are built on trust, accountability, and a shared commitment to the common good —qualities only found in those who balance humility, hungry, and smart. Take the Ideal Team Player assessment.
